The Tafsir of Ibn Kathir Part 4

This book contains the interpretation of the tenth through the seventeenth surahs of the Glorious Qur'an, the primary source of Islam. A comprehensive commentary must take into account the many aspects of diverse fields of knowledge. These include Arabic grammar and linguistics, jurisprudence, context, history, and others. It is perhaps superfluous to state that this requires universal knowledge.

Ibn Kathir says in the introduction to his Tafsir: “If someone asks for the best methods of Tafsir, we reply that the most correct method is to explain the Qur’an with the Qur’an itself. What is mentioned in general terms in one place in the Qur’an is usually explained in another. If this is not found easily, one should look to the Sunnah, as its purpose is to explain the Qur’an and clarify its meaning. Allah says: 'We have revealed the Reminder (the Qur’an) to you (O Muhammad) so that you may clearly explain to the people what has been sent down to them, and that they may reflect.' (16 Surah an-Nahl: 44) For this reason, the Messenger of Allah said: 'I have been given the Qur’an and its equivalent,' referring to the Sunnah.”

The first generation of Islam usually refrained from explaining that of which they had no knowledge. The following statement has been narrated from Abu Bakr as-Siddiq: “What land will bear me and what sky will cover me if I say something about the Book of Allah that I have no knowledge of?”
